Cycling is a great way to stay in shape, plus it gets you out in the open, and can afford a great way of getting from A to B. But choosing to commit to cycling is only the beginning. After that you need to choose a bike, and whatever your choice is it will determine the road you go down – do to speak – as a cyclist. The two main categories out there are mountain bikes – also known as MTBs – and Road Bikes. Here are some of the arguments for choosing each respective class.

MTBs or Mountain bikes have been with us for around thirty years now. They were pushed forward in the eighties as a new way of taking bikes into challenging terrain. Their thick wheels and suspension allow them to get out onto rocky paths and areas that other bikes wouldn’t be able to climb. If you’re looking for a sturdy ride you won’t be disappointed as MTBs are easy to pick up and use, and very durable, even in the dangerous environment of the city. As such they’re often the everyday bike of choice.

Road bikes take advantage of ultra light frames and narrow wheels to get serious speed going on the road. If you’re looking to rack up miles then these are the bike of choice. They can travel much faster than mountain bikes over flat, smooth terrain, and keep you feeling fresh thanks to their streamlined nature. Modern road bikes lock you in to the pedals with foot clamps, and benefit even more from a streamlined outfit, so there’s a definite look to go along with them.

If you’re split between to two there are options. A cyclo-cross bike will offer you the lightweight advantages of a road bike, while still allowing you the suspension and tyres to hit the rough trails if you want to. These are actually one of the best choices for the work commute, as they won’t break easily and have a high speed, but also keep you stable in the same way as a mountain bike.

There’s no wrong choice as far as bike type is concerned – whatever enthusiasts might tell you. You’ve just go to pick something to suit your needs.

Get a great deals montane atomic jacket online this year.

The 29 inch diameter tyres that give them their name were originally a feature of snow bikes in Finland, where the extra height was a necessity.

29er bikes – or two-nine-ers as you’ll be pressed to call them – are a point of contention for cycling enthusiasts. They came about way back in the eighties during the early days of mountain bike development, but it’s taken quite while for the idea to catch on. The 29 inch diameter tyres that give them their name were originally a feature of snow bikes in Finland, where the extra height was a necessity. British off road designer Geoff Apps applied them to a prototype off-road vehicle in 1981, and received glowing approval from Gary Fisher on their performance.

That three inch lead on wheel diameter might seem like a small difference, but when you ride the things you really see what’s going on. Rough terrain becomes something you can march over, and rocks don’t slow you down nearly as much as with a two-sixer. The posh way of saying this is that you get a better approach angle on obstacles. Another piece of science to consider is angular momentum: the force generated at the centre of a spinning object. With big types you get bigger angular momentum, which in turn makes it easier to stay stable and bounce over obstacles.

Detractors point out a range of issues with this. They claim that the increased weight of the wheel is a big problem. It means that it takes more work to both accelerate and break. This comes into steering too, as you have more contact with the road on a 29er, and a heavier tyre, so generally it slows down the responsiveness of the bike. In addition people of a shorter stature will find it more difficult to deal with tall tyres, although conversely it can be a lot more comfortable for tall riders.

One very simple distinction that might help make up your mind comes down to the rider. It you’re tall you might find that a 29er suits you better, as you’re on a frame to match your build. If you’re not so tall you’ll find that it’s hard to keep balance on the bike, and generally impractical.

It’s quite a thrill ride, given the less-responsive steering, so maybe pace yourself when you’re first getting used to the caprices of the bike. It’s an easy one to fall in love with though.

Look for a bike with these Shimano Ultegra Ui4 as they are awesome.

The Scott Voltage or Yz range has been about for a few years now. With the backing and designs from Timo Pretzil (the guy responsible for the double back flip) the range has gone from strength to strength.

Originally the range was brought out as a kids range, with their big down tubes and monstrous chainstays, frame warranties from the usual kids’ skids and riding into kerbs became a thing of the past. The range immediately sold well as parents wanted a bike that lasted. Scott decided to launch a mountain bike………

Surprisingly the sales carried on through to the adult sizes just as well but within the higher end models including the Voltage Yz2 and Voltage Yz1. These models came fully designed with Shimano gearing and cable or hydraulic disc brakes. With prices topping out at around 480 these made a dent in the market.

After a successful couple of years the more hardcore Yz0 jump bike and Yz ltd were released as both a full bike or as a frame only model. Timo Pritzil put his name behind the Yz0 frameset and is responsible for countless 1sts on a jump bike. Currently the bright Orange Voltage 0.2 is one of the more popular models. Suitable for ramp riding, street and dirt this single speed jump bike does it all. Still keeping the oversized tubing that made the frame so well known the frameset really does stand out. Set off with white BMX style single speed crank (ideal for clearance over the coping on ramps) and a white Marzocchi dirt jumper 3 fork set at 100mm of travel it really does look the part. Even the disc brake callipers are white.

Throughout the years with 4x racing and dual slalom racing getting bigger in great britan the upper end Voltages are actually the better sellers and with the expertise of the frames they may be still put to use for custom builds by many. They are really just about the most versatile jump bikes out there along with the strength and ability to manage the harshest of rides.

Check out a awesome range of mountain bikes here. I’ve seen some amazing deals and I think you should see them too.

(Anthony Ippolito, the world-racer is the main designer of the course.)

I really don’t love building trails, Bomber admits. It’s not easy, He enjoys the benefits that accompany it. “I fit right in with nature.” When working in the cool jungle and eventually, the animals don’t bother him. “And, because I’m also trying to stay as fit and youthful as I can, I find that trail work is terrific exercise.” Additionally, Bomber notes that he is able to customize the trail.

Bomber listens to, “flow. He’s had nearly twenty years of living and loving everything about mountain biking, so he really knows what true aficionados of the sport need and want. Travelling on mountain paths will be very interesting.Fairly safe. Be advised that this bike is a middle of the road choice for most riders.

Bomber’s Howler Course Insights

	It’s been rainier this year. “Water damage will be severe. Dealing with the damages and making sure there is a good loop for the course are the first two priorities. I expect to see many places eroded or water damaged. If a spot washes out from water, the first option is to re-route the trail another way. The second option is to repair the trail so it can accommodate both water runoff and the trail. This is much harder than it sounds. It is an art!”

Flow is another important aspect. The reason why people buy mountain bikes is to travel the trails. Many existing courses have dirt roads as connectors for trails or on hill climb portions of courses. My personal preference would be to make the Howler nothing but woods. Except the start and finish, the rest of the race will be on rough mountain paths. I’m always on the lookout to make sketchy spots flow better.

There can always be improvements done on a trail. What would really be decent – in fact it would be better for everybody concerned – is to either find some sections of the ride that have unridable uphill sections or, at the very least, very difficult to manage. Before any changes can be made, including switchbacks and some route changes can be made, we will have to contact the landowners and get their consent.

	Change is the only constant. “Mountain bike trails are always evolving and changing. Nature sometimes dictates where changes are needed due to wind and rain. Or by cattle and horses. Changes in land ownership also close or open land use rights.”

Living up to his standards, Bomber’s website NicaFun.com has a glorious shot of San Juan del Sur from the montaas (mountains). San Juan Howler Mountain Bike Race is grateful to having dedicated and experienced hands of a mountain bike course -builder as in “Bomber” Bombardier.
