Anyone lost a lot of weight from riding a bike?

I have been considering getting a bike to start riding. I have about 75 lbs to loose and I would like to loose it by bike riding. Has anyone lost a bunch of weight just from starting to ride a bike regularly? How many miles/week would you recommend to start out?

I have lost 25 lbs. But there is nothing magical about biking or any other exercise. You need something you like (biking for me) so you will stay with it. An important thing to realize is exercise alone will not do it. YOU MUST DIET! What exercise does is keep your metabolism up while you diet. Dieting causes your body to slow your metabolism down to save energy because you are not getting as much. Exercise keeps your metalbolism up. I can’t tell you how many miles a week you can do. Start out every other day with what is comfortable and build up. 15 to 20 minutes is absolute minimum for an aerobic workout. I generally do 60 to 90 minutes depending of how much time I have

You will NEVER lose 75 pounds just by riding a bike, you have to diet and do other exercises.

Bike Riding is fun, but not the best way to loose fat. It works well if all you do is uphill :D But apart from that, its not great.
I reccomend swimming and power walking.

That depends on how a good a shape your in. Start out and go as long as you can till your very tired. Time yourself and then do that distance for a week. Each week bump it up till your tired and follow the formula.
You will loose weight I have kept off 70 pound for a decade I find that adding 10 minute brisk walks at lunch and or in the morning will help too. In fact a friend of mine who walked with me use to say we aren’t doing anything by walking and when she quit she gained another 20 pound that year by eating the same amount according to her.

Yes, you can loose weight with biking and reduce your calories. Easy way see what you would have eaten cut it in 3/4 then 1/2 then 1/4 you will loose. No need to count anything it will work. Also check out a program for 10 on line called weightcommander.com it is fabulous!!!

You can do it just stick to it!!!!!!

Loosing weight by biking is a good idea as it is a low impact exercise when compared to jogging or running. The key to loosing weight is not miles but time. To lose weight you must burn more calories than you take in. considering you want to lose 75lbs, it will take a while. 1lb of fat equals 3500 calories. It you ride for 1 hour you will burn 1200~1500 calories depending on you weight. Start with a visit to your doctor, you do not want to over do it if you have high blood pressure or other health issues. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t see the pounds melt off right away, your body will need time to adjust to loosing fat and not storing it. When you do go riding pedal steady, don’t pedal then stop and coast, keep those legs moving, and stay hydrated.
(one of my co-workers lost 45lbs in 6 months by diet and riding.)

This if from personal experience. Last year I needed to lose weight and eat better for 2 reasons, I need to lower my cholesterol and to lose weight. I am 5’5" and as of January 2006 I weighed 180lbs. I started eating right, which is very important to losing weight. When I started bike riding in June 2006 it was hard. . .It was hard to go even 5 miles, but I kept at it and started going farther little by little. I started to get on my bike about 3 times a week and eventually would go about 20 miles ever time I was out on my bike. By the time September came around, I was at 145 lbs. I lost 35 lbs. during that time. I believe eating right and excersice are key in losing weight. . .one without the other and it will be hard.

I lost 30 pounds by riding 4 times a week, and stopping eating my lunch at restaurants every work day.

i lost about 10lbs by riding. i put a few pounds of muscle back on. i wasnt heavy to begin with. im 17, and weigh about 145lbs now. a healthy diet will help a lot. cut out a lot of the burgers, beer, steaks, etc, and replace it with a salad, oatmeal, fruit, that kinda stuff. it may not sound good, but some of that stuff tastes pretty darn good when you get the right combo.

start out riding about 5 miles a day, for 3 or 4 days a week. ride a day, rest a day. during your day off of riding, try something else, like basketball, soccer, or just walking.

    good luck

I ride about 100-140 miles a week. High pace riding. I lost 50 lbs. in 2 1/2 months however, this is not watching what I ate. If I had watched my diet a little better, I probably would’ve lost 60-70. Your intake is going to increase…BIGTIME. This is where the food discipline really comes in. Fruits, veggies, nuts, salads. All this will help you lose weight.

I would recommend going to the doctor first for a physical. If you have 75 pounds to lose, he needs to be involved. What you start out riding will most likely be very short. You must change your diet and not just go on a diet. Successful sustainable weight lose is about lifestyle changes and not just the new fad diet.
